A Little History
The molcajete has been used in Mexico for more than 2,000 years and was already an essential kitchen tool of the ancient Mesoamerican civilizations. Carved from volcanic stone, it is still found in millions of Mexican homes, where it is used every day to prepare salsas, guacamole, adobos and countless traditional recipes.
Did You Know...?
Did you know that the word "molcajete" comes from the Nahuatl word "molcaxitl"? Long before the arrival of the Europeans, Indigenous peoples in Mexico were already using this volcanic stone mortar to grind corn, chiles, tomatoes and spices.

Why is a Molcajete Better than a Food Processor?

How to Season a Volcanic Stone Molcajete
Before using it for the first time, a traditional molcajete must be seasoned. This process removes any loose volcanic stone particles and prepares the surface for cooking.
Step 1
Wash the molcajete thoroughly using only water and a stiff brush. Do not use detergent.
Step 2
Grind a handful of uncooked white rice until it turns grey. Discard the rice and repeat the process several times until the rice remains almost completely white.
Step 3
Grind several garlic cloves, onion and coarse salt to remove any remaining stone particles while naturally seasoning the surface.
Step 4
Rinse using only water and allow the molcajete to air dry completely.
Your molcajete is now ready to prepare authentic guacamole, salsas, adobos and many other traditional Mexican recipes.
Care Instructions
Season before first use according to traditional molcajete preparation methods.
Hand wash only.
Allow to dry completely before storage.
Do not use detergents as volcanic stone is naturally porous.
